They're not anything special. That can happen to any fitting. You need to adjust the end of your grease gun fitting adapter. If you slightly unscrew the end of it, it will loosen up and be easier to put on and take off your grease fittings. :thumbup1gif:

Thanks for the info.. FIL retired as a heavy equiptment mechanic,greaser. Never thought to ask him why I couldn't get my grease gun off a fitting. If I was at his place and used his grease gun no problem..

 

ok Ill try that, ive never had a problem getting the grease gun hose off the fittings before, I thought they were some special fitting

In my experience, grease gun fittings are always harder to remove if you try to pull them straight off. I think they are built that way so you don't have to push the adapter into the zerk as much when you're pumping grease. And they are tighter when the gun/adapter is new. I always just swing the adapter to the side and it usually comes right off.

But I assume you are already doing that.

I tried sideways up down and all around and they wouldnt come off. I fianally after some coaxing was able to get it off but it was hard

You are not alone. I've had the exact same problem. It seems to be worse on new grease guns. It goes on easy and then will not come off. I've even had them rip out the zerk fitting trying to get them off.

I have a new one I just got at TSC and the end looks like it can be unscrewed to loosen the grip but it does not unscrew. I've even clamped it in the vise and used a pair of very large vise grips and it will not budge. With everything being made in China it is hard to find a good grease gun with a high quality collet. I've read on-line of guys taking a dremel tool and releiving the inside of the collet to reduce the grip. The grease guns seem okay, it's the collets that are junk. Surely someone out there still makes a high quality adjustable collet that I can screw on to the end of my grease gun hose.

Maybe what you need is a used gun on Craig's List that is well worn. Somewhere between "won't detach" and "squirts grease everywhere". ;-)

Like most things these days it is a frustration brought on my cost-cutting manufacturing.

 

Look for Lincoln grease guns and parts. They are great quality. NAPA used to carry them. I'm not sure now. :unknown:

I was going to buy a Lincoln grease gun from Amazon a while back. While all the reviews said it was a nice grease gun, the #1 complaint was that it was impossible to get the collet off the zerk fittings.

I figured I already owned one of those. :-(

 

+1 on the Lincoln grease gun. I bought a Lincoln pneumatic gun on ebay. Works great. With all the grease fittings on this these tractors a high quality grease gun makes sense. I'm just sick of chinese junk.

 

I don't know who makes them, but I have had great luck with the JD branded ones from the dealer. The price was reasonable as well, I like the pistol grip style.

 

Interesting that you say that. The very grease gun I was referring to in my response was the JD pistol grip gun I just got. I used it to grease my blower when I attached it two weekends ago and I could not get the collet off the zerk fittings. I'm surprised it didn't rip them out.

It looks like the end should unscrew to loosen the tension but I cannot get it to unscrew. Even locked in the vise with big vise grips. The metal shreds but it does not loosen.

I didn't realize the Chinese were duplicating JD green. :thumbsdown:

The combination of new zerks and a new coupler can make it nearly impossible to get the coupler off the zerk. After they both get used for awhile it will get easier to get the coupler off the zerk. Try twisting the coupler while tilting it to the side.
