Harbor Freight D Cell Pumps failing

I am on the third one in 2 years. The first two started to leak into the battery compartment in less than a year and the one I bought in February just up and died. Anybody having better luck than I am with these cheap HF pumps?

Any similar pumps that people are using with more reliability?

The results with these types of pumps seems to vary wildly. I have one that I bought 11 YEARS ago from Amazon for $18 that still works fine and is still on the original set of D-cell batteries. Crazy for sure. It only gets used a few times a year for sucking fuel out of mower tanks which may be why it has lasted so long.

I recently bought a stick-style Tera-Pump with a longer hose but I have not yet had a chance to try it. I will use it for pumping fuel out of 5-gallon jugs into my bulk tank. We'll see how that goes.

I have a Tera pump also, used it 6 - 7 times with 5 gallon jugs so far, no problems.
Bought the type with adapters to fit various jugs.
Uses 4 AA batteries, supposedly they will last at least 100 gallons worth of pumping.
Empties 5 gallons in 2 - 2.5 minutes.
$76 with tax, Home Depot, a little pricey, but saves the back, longevity wise we'll see.

I'm not sure which pump you're talking about. Is this the one?

I haven't tried one of those, but I've been pretty happy with this one:

I particularly like the longer hose and the fact that it will shut off automatically when the tank is full.

Best,

I did have a chuckle when I read the title to this thread and the words “failing” and “Harbor Freight” were used in the same sentence. 😆

I know there are some deals there, and I’m an occasional customer as well. Just had a laugh and kinda said to myself, you get what you pay for. I rarely buy anything from HF with no other expectations other than one use.🤷🏻‍♂️

They discontinued the one product that wasn't a throw away, the aluminum step stool!

The battery load tester is a pretty cheap throw together of a stamped metal basket, a cheapie resistance/heating element and a cheapie electric meter. Probably overpriced at 20 bucks but still cheaper than most other chinesium testers.

I always though the rule of thumb with HF is to not expect an inexpensive motor to last thus the electric "things" are throwaways.

I use mine for gas and diesel and drain it after each use. Mostly for gas.

I stick a piece of tygon tube on to extend the hose.

The pump bodies all look pretty similar. Not sure what if any difference there is in the different models. I ordered a replacement off Amazon for $10 that looks identical to the HF unit. One of the previous pumps I bought at Walmart.

I’ve been using a couple of the Harbor Freight transfer pumps for a number of years now with no problems.
Use one pump for gas .. the other one for diesel… Still haven’t had to change out the batteries since I bought the pumps new …
