Hey folks, I was snowblowing some wet snow today with my JD 650 and was working her hard (but not too hard, I wasn't letting it get too bogged down) for about a 20 minutes and all of a sudden the tractor shut off. It didn't sputter, it just shut right off as if I throttled down to shut it off. I checked to see if I had ran out of fuel but I had plenty so I tried restarting the tractor. The starter would crank really slow and after cranking for just a few seconds I see smoke coming from the backside of the starter from this connection on the starter
, here is a video of what the starter is doing. I can see the crankshaft spinning when the tractor turns over so I don't think the engine seized up. The everything was pretty warm but even after letting it sit for a couple of hours there was no change after trying to start it again. Any ideas? I am quite puzzled. Thanks!

How old is the battery? Have you checked standing voltage? (Nothing turned on.)

Sure wish I still had my 650 manuals.:banghead:
I would remove the starter and have it checked out. It may not be the whole problem but it does seem to be a problem.
I would also check the throttle linkage, as you know (unlike the newer tractors) the tractor will not start unless you give it some throttle and will shut down without throttle.

As mentioned the battery should be load tested but it sounds like it's probably OK. Smoke at the starter? You might have a short in the starter. Possibly a broken brush holder or shorted armature. Remove the starter. Disassemble and inspect or take it to an auto electric shop for analysis.
