Largest Tire Size for 3046r

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me explore different tire options for a 3046r. I live in a rainy region and my soil stays soft much of the year. I've noticed different tractors I've used have vastly different impacts in terms of how much soil compaction and ruts they make in our pastures.

I am in the process of purchasing a used 3046r with R4s, but am looking at options to change these out for R14 tires and and looking for something with the largest footprint I can create on this tractor. I'd prefer to be able to use the stock wheels but would be open to changing them out completely.

Thanks!

As soon as I saw the thread I thought about @j. white and his 3039R. Those bigger turfs are the largest tires I've ever seen on a 3 series.

What was the stock size of tires you had and then what are the 4 series ones you put on it?

I do remember that the R4 rears were 43" and the turf are 44". Here's another shot.
Thank you - that looks great. I'm going to do some research on those. It looks like the 4 series turf tire rears are 44x18-20 and the front are 27/10.5-15.

I found this thread by @Big J where he put Trelleborg TM800 440/65 R24 on the rear, Trelleborg TM700 240/70 R16 on the front with what appears to be new wheels and 2 x 25mm spacers on the rear. That calculates to be 46.5/17.3 R24 in the rear and 29.2/9.4 R16 on the front.

I'm interested to see if anyone has any input on the wheels I'd need to run that setup. I found some of those tires online but not sure what I would need from a wheel standpoint. I did find some with JD wheels but they had a 8.5" pilot and apparently the 3-series has a 6" pilot.

Hi ,
I had the rims made by the tyre dealer to suit the hubs , wasn’t too expensive . Just need to get offset correct to save on the spacers . I can send you the details from my original invoice and could get some rim drawings from Trelleborg if it helps . Jono
I've been looking up some options to try and re-create that setup as much as possible. So far this is what I've found in the US for sources:

This is what I've found so far in terms of the correct parts. I'd appreciate your input on if this is the same as you used:

Rear tires: Trelleborg TM800 440/65 R24 on eBay - $325 each
Rear wheels: 24x15 Deere Tires at Miller Tire - $495 each
Front tires: Can't find the exact brand, but same size - $231.99 each
Front wheels: 8x16 Deere Wheels - Tractor parts ASAP - $133.89 each

This looks like it would run me around $2400 to swap everything out. I don't know what I could get on the used market for my used R4's. I also don't know if I'd have to add wheel spacers to the rear wheels which would add to the costs.

Open to any suggestions. I'm looking for the lowest soil compaction option I can find for a reasonable choice that will also perform well in wet and muddy conditions. My land is very flat.

I'm still researching tire brands and sizes. It seems like the TM800 440/65/24 may be my best option in the woods to give me a "low soil compaction" option as well as traction in the woods. It would allow me to run it at as low as 12psi, increase my footprint significantly, and still achieve good traction in the slick clay mud. Tire diameter is listed at 46.5" and width at 17.3".

It looks like I could go with a 29x12.5-15 on the front, have a little more width, and still match the tire size ratio for 4WD.

Here is the thread I had a while back with details on my 4066R Setup.
I went with Firestones front and rear.

@j. white I was hoping you could help me out on a few questions on your 4 series tire setup. I really like the look and it seems to fit my needs perfectly. I'm in the process of trading in my 1025r for a new 3039r and asked if I could swap for this setup but they said no, it would void warranty. Have you had any issues or did Deere ever give you any problems/hassle due to your setup?

I put a set of turf tires and wheels from a 4 series on my 3039R and it made a huge difference. View attachment 889745 View attachment 889747
J.white I’m curious if you happen to run a mid mount mower with those tires? I looking to put a set of turfs together for mowing as I think the R4’s are going to be too rough on the lawn. I like the looks of your setup but need to make sure the mower will fit. The added height will help with deck clearance as well.

I would bet that’s a negative Ghost rider on Jwhites setup clearing a mmm.
‘I bet that setup is at lest 64“ wide.
‘Mine is right at 61 wide.
Mine is very close to my right rear gauge wheel on my mmm.

cc1999 are you running spacers on the rears on your setup? How do you like those tires for work on turf? Any issues with tearing on wet/soft surfaces?

Turf radials are great on most any surface except mud.
Have similar turf radial on my X758 mower as well.
I have mowed my yard with every type of tire R1, R3,R4, bias and radials, and my favorite is the R3 hybrid turf radial.
‘My least favorite is the bias turf tires like Deere offers as a factory option. The mighty mow’s are only good for mowing dry ground.
Honestly only tire combo I can honestly say really tears the heck out of a lawn, is running an R1 specifically an R1 on the front steering tires. I have 2 tractors with R1 tires on the rear, but none with R1s on the front.
‘I can mow or spray or do about anything I want on my yard and I do exactly that, all the time, with any or all of my tractors from X7-5R.

Yes I do have 2.25 rear spacers but the rims are standard Deere R3 turf tire rims which the rear wheels are narrower and have a different offset then say an OE R4 wheel tire combo.

In Example. a 43” R4 OEM tire combo with 3” spacers will hit the right rear gauge wheel on the mmm.

I regret not taking a picture but I remember seeing one 5series machine our dealer was preping that had custom wheel setup. The destination was a golf course so those tires were comically huge (height and especially width wise). Mighty mows would be considered narrow tires compared to those.

There's a sod farm down south of us that runs a few tractors like that, including some 5 series Deere's and similar size Kubota's, and even an old 66 series IH with big ol turf tires on it.
