My 2038r/2032r fuel filter

Doing my yearly maintenance, almost 100 hours figured I would get it done in the heated shop while it’s freezing out, the fuel filter part # that JD lists is miu800645, that’s what I bought online and what the dealer says fits, and JD parts says fits, well it doesn’t match up with the yanmar filter that was on the machine. So has anyone changed this filter yet and with what? The yanmar # on the original is 129a23-55800 and the yanmar # Deere says fits is 119802-55801. Dealer is more confused than I am at this point. I found a yanmar original online for 51$ and a wix alternative for 25$ but the length on the wix is too long as it would hit the scv for the front 3 point hitch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Help us out a little... what do you mean by "it doesn't match up"? Does it not fit or does it just look a little different?

I assume you are referring to the spin-on fuel filter on the side of the engine. If so, MIU800645 is the correct part number. It is the same fuel filter that is used on both the Gen1 and Gen2 2-series tractors. If you mean the filter looks different than the factory installed filter that may very well be. Typically the OEM fuel and oil filters installed by Yanmar at the factory may have different labeling or may even have slightly different external dimensions. The replacement filters listed by JD are the correct ones for your tractor.

It’s the high efficiency fuel filter on the side by the oil filter, does this not need changed? The part number I listed originally was for the fuel filter on the other side, under the floorboard, figured that out now.

I've never heard of a high efficiency fuel filter.

The 2032R/2038R should have two fuel filters. A "primary" spin-on filter (MIU800645) and a "secondary" filter element located inside the water separator bowl (M811032).

Are you referring to one of these two filters?

If the one inside the separator bowl is anything like the previous gen 2-series it is just a plastic screen that can be cleaned and doesn't need to be replaced unless it gets damaged.

Having said that... the maintenance list for the 2038R shows two fuel filters. But the parts diagram seems to show THREE filters. Although illustration #41 is referred to as a filter "kit" and costs $141 (MIA884405).

Ya I guess this high efficiency fuel filter on the opposite side of the tractor is confusing me as well I cleaned the plastic screen in the bowl and got the spin on filter changed now, but this filter, see photo, has me puzzled.

Ok... now I see where you are getting the "High Efficiency" part. ;-) At $142 it would have me puzzled as well!!

What about part illustration #50? What does that look like on your tractor?

When it comes to the new Gen2 2-series, the more I read the owner's manual and parts list the more I think JD really messed up when it comes to the documentation on these new tractors. Let's take the fuel filter question... how many are there and where are they located?

The parts illustration seems to show three fuel filters, shown highlighted below. A "Fuel filter", a "Filter element" and a "Filter kit"

These are:

MIU800645 - $11.60 (Fuel filter)
M811032 - $12.17 (Filter element)
MIA884405 - $141.57 (Filter kit)

If you go onto JD Parts and search for maintenance filter parts for the 2038R you will only see TWO fuel filters listed, a Primary and a Secondary.

FiltersPrimary Fuel FilterMIU800645

FiltersSecondary Fuel FilterM811032Price it

And third... if you go to the owner's manual it only mentions two filters, an in-line Pre-Filter and a Final Filter. I have never seen a spin-on fuel filter referred to as an "in-line pre-filter". Those are usually the little cylindrical units that hook in-line with the fuel hose.

Three different sources of maintenance information containing three different flavors of information.

How on earth do they expect the owner to know what to do?

Replacing Fuel Filters

  • Park machine safely. Allow engine to cool.
  • Close fuel shutoff valve.

  2. Wipe dirt from around filter.
  3. Turn filter counterclockwise to remove.
  4. Apply fuel to surface of new filter gasket.
  5. Install replacement filter by turning filter clockwise until gasket contacts filter base. Tighten an additional 1/2 turn.
  6. Start and run engine at idle to check for leaks.

  5. Install new filter to filter head. Tighten to one complete turn after filter contacts head.
  6. Open fuel shutoff valve.

I can try to read manuals all day long, but in the end, it has to make sense. This is exactly why GTT is invaluable to someone like me, new tractor owner, with not a lot of 'under the hood' experience. These kind of things would be so much more frustrating, difficult and expensive without you guys' expertise and know-how.

Hopefully this helps some when they go to do maintenance on these new machines, luckily the shop fridge is well stocked.

Thank you for the photos. Let me see if I have this correct.

Item #41 is what the owner's manual calls a Final Fuel filter. It is a spin-on filter and it is located on the right side of the tractor near the oil filter.

Item #50 is what the owner's manual calls an In-line Pre-Fuel filter. It is a spin-on filter and it is located under the left side floor board behind the step.

Yeah, that is a strange spot. So... the new 2-series uses the same $11 spin-on fuel filter that the previous 2-series used. Only on the new 2-series it is called a pre-fuel filter whereas on the previous 2-series it was the Secondary fuel filter. Both generations use the same little plastic screen inside the water separator bowl.

But... the new 2-series now adds a third filter called a "Final Fuel Filter" that is another small spin-on filter except it costs $142! Ugh.

#14 ·
Number 15 looks like another inline fuel filter to me.

#21 ·
I bought all my filters already. I can’t remember what I paid, but it was not $141. I bought all three, two were cheap and one was expensive. Bought all three for a little over 100 bucks. I’m up to speed on my oil and hydraulic oil scheduled changes, but I’m not sure when to change the fuel filters. Is there an early break in change for fuel filters?

#22 ·
Do you have the John Deere part # for the spin on final fuel filter? My dealer could only come up with the number for the filter kit at 141$ which I will not pay out of principle.

The book says fuel filters yearly, so I did my oil, air filter(600 hours seems too long to me on an air filter) and fuel filters minus the 141$ one yesterday, 95 hours and I have had it for 11 months, seemed close enough for me.

Personally, I'd eliminate that thing. Overkill in my mind, let alone a really crappy location. Kingnuke, if you "woods" your machine that thing is just begging to get dented up or worse ripped off. Unbelievable, to think that's the best location they could come up with!:unknown:

These are the two my dealer sold me.

Description:Fuel Filter - OIL FILTER, FUEL FILTER

Knowing the part number I was able to find it in the 2038R parts listing. The filters are listed under the ENGINE section, sub-section FUEL LINE.

With virtually ALL other tractors the fuel filters are listed under the main section of FUEL and AIR. With the new 2-series JD only listed two of the three fuel filters here. I will say again, JD needs to go back and straighten out the documentation on the new 2-series and dump whoever was responsible for organizing the manuals.

I was going to let the 2R series guys know that my dealership offered me a kit that has everything in it. Hydraulic, oil, and fuel filters. I already had most of what I needed so I didn’t get it. I agree, the manuals on these tractors are a mess. I would be embarrassed if I where JD, such nice tractors to release the manuals in this condition.

#30 ·
Since we now know that the High Efficiency filter is not a "kit". It would be nice to know exactly what items are included in Filter Kit MIA884405.

#31 ·
That makes sense then that this extra special 51$ filter matches with yanmars cost, wix has an alternative for hAlf that price for anyone without the front 3pt hitch hydro valve there.

Thanks for showing the part numbers, MYSTERY SOLVED! Hopefully this helps someone when they go to perform service.

I have to say that I have figured out that my dealship’s service guys are pretty good. They have had the answers to a lot of problems other dealerships have caused with these new 2R tractors. I have a question, guys. What hour mark are you guys changing fuel filters?

#34 ·
The service interval is 400 hours. A lot of 400 hour service interval items also include the text "or annually", I figure I'll follow the 400 hour or 1 year whichever comes first.
